Driving license class AM, S, M, and B for e-scooters up to 45 km/h

These advantages are offered by e-scooters
Before the official approval, e-scooters had to put up with plenty of criticism. But the initial skepticism has quickly evaporated and the advantages of the innovative technology cannot be denied. Especially in urban areas, e-scooters make a significant contribution to improving the carbon footprint and reducing the volume of traffic.
More and more means of transport are being converted to electric drives, but none of them is as efficient in practice as an e-scooter. The motorized scooter can also hold its own against e-bikes and e-scooters. This is due to

Who is allowed to ride an e-scooter?
The unique driving experience on an electric scooter arouses many people the interest to take the wheel into their own hands. But what is allowed and who is entitled to drive with the agile e-runabout. On private grounds, these questions play a rather subordinate role, but in public space, there are clear rules that should be known. Because here the guiding principle applies: Ignorance does not protect against punishment.
Minimum age for e-scooters
For e-scooters with road approval, which according to the registration do not drive faster than 20 km / h, a minimum age of 14 years is required. A driving license is not required for these models, provided that they comply with the legal requirements for small electric vehicles. However, the situation is different with electric scooters that drive faster. Here, a moped test certificate (up to 25 km/h) is required, which can be purchased at the age of 15 or 16, depending on the federal state. From the age of 16, it is also possible to acquire the driving license class AM, which entitles you to drive e-scooters and e-scooters up to 45 km/h.
License holder
If you have a car driver’s license of class B or higher, you can drive e-scooters up to 45 km/h in public spaces without further qualifications. However, the prerequisite for this is a valid license and an electric scooter with road approval.
Driving without a driver’s license
If you do not have a driver’s license or had to hand it in, you may only use an e-scooter with road approval, which is registered as a small electric vehicle and is designed for a maximum speed of 20 km/h. However, the situation is different if higher instances prohibit the use. If there is no valid driving license and the e-scooter drives faster, this can be punished legally. This also applies in the event that the electric scooter does not have road approval.
On the road as a couple on the e-scooter
In Germany, e-scooters are only approved for one person, even if two or more could be on the running board. An exception to this is the eFlux Chopper Two, which is equipped with two seats.

Is it allowed to ride an e-scooter on cycle paths?
Driving an e-scooter with street approval is permitted in public spaces. However, there are some restrictions, because electric scooters are not allowed everywhere. The same requirements apply here as for scooters. This means that driving on cycle paths with the e-scooter is not permitted; unless there is an ABE for small electric vehicles that certifies that the e-scooter with road approval drives a maximum of 20 km/h.
